Periodontal Maintenance

Periodontal Maintenance

Gum infections, or periodontal disorders, slowly damage the structure that supports your natural teeth. Different treatment methods are needed for various disease types. In people who have a genetic susceptibility to gum disease, dental plaque is the main problem. Most dental conditions can be avoided with regular brushing and flossing.

Why is Oral Hygiene So Important?

Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, causes higher tooth loss in those over 35 than cavities do. Adults are impacted at some point in three out of every four lives. Daily use of proper brushing and flossing techniques is the best defense against cavities and periodontal disease.

Bacterial plaque is the source of tooth decline and periodontal disease. A white coating called plaque adheres to your teeth along the gum line. Your teeth are continually collecting plaque. These bacteria can be eliminated and periodontal disease can be prevented by careful daily brushing and flossing.

Other Important Factors Affecting the Health of Your Gums Include:

  • Smoking
  • Diabetes
  • Stress
  • Clenching and grinding teeth
  • Medication
  • Poor nutrition

Periodontal Disease

Toxins or poisons produced by bacteria in plaque irritate the gums, causing them to swell, bleed, and turn red. Over time, inflammation causes the gums to pull away from the teeth, causing pockets (spaces). The gum tissue and bone that support and maintain teeth in place turn with the growth of periodontal disorders. This results in tooth loss if neglected.

Preventing Gum Disease

Effective daily brushing and flossing along with regular checkups and cleanings by a professional are the greatest ways to avoid gum disease. However, periodontal disease can still develop in certain persons even with the most thorough at-home dental care. To stop this condition from getting worse, expert intervention is required once it has occurred.
